A Powerful Milestone as Liam Rosenior Transcends Obstacles

"He is a quality coach that understands the game back to front, and that's what matters most.

"But, as Chelsea's first black footballer, I would be lying to claim this appointment fails to move me."

Those are the sentiments expressed by Paul Canoville, who made his groundbreaking first appearance for Chelsea's senior side as a substitute in the spring of 1982.

On Tuesday, the club appointed RC Strasbourg manager Rosenior, 41, as their next head coach after the departure of manager Enzo Maresca.

The French club is within a Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned BlueCo that also controls Chelsea.

There have been only twelve of African or Caribbean heritage managers – not including individuals in interim roles – in England's top flight since it began 34 in the past.

"What really strikes me regarding Rosenior is he was raised and played not far from here, he knows this community," added Canoville.

"Whenever kids see a figure like Rosenior managing the team they support, a person they can identify with, who's from their ends, from a household that champions equality… that's powerful demonstrating the path is there.

"Indeed, this represents a huge moment for Chelsea, for London, for all aspiring individual with big dreams.

"However, currently? We must support Rosenior, give him the necessary tools, and allow him to do his work."

What Exactly Do the Data Show?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit was appointed Chelsea head coach in 1996 thereby becoming the Premier League's inaugural African heritage manager.

A dozen years on, by 2008, Paul Ince became the pioneering black English manager in the Premier League after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional present top flight gaffer from a minority ethnic background.

The shortage of ethnic minority managers throughout English football is matched by an absence of diversity at executive level.

According to a Black Footballers Partnership 2023 report, 43% of top-flight footballers are from black backgrounds.

Yet, analysis by the equality organization found just 3.2% of board and senior leadership positions across most Premier League clubs are from minority ethnic communities.

Regarding senior coaching level, based on figures provided by 11 clubs, the figure stands at two percent.

Across all coaching positions – encompassing senior roles – from those same 11 clubs, the figure is just 5%.

"He has undoubtedly broken barriers in terms of him being announced as a the Chelsea head coach, and we want to witness more such appointments," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists a wealth of talent that exists within ethnic minority groups... they desire a chance to show what they can do. It is imperative to persist in work hard to dismantle those barriers once and for all."

Additionally, Rosenior will become one of only four permanent English head coaches presently in the Premier League – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – a number that trails Europe's other major leagues in terms of homegrown managers.

16 of the 20 top-flight managers in Italy are from Italy, Eleven of the 20 in Spain, 12 of the 18 in Germany and 10 of the 18 are French.

Current Blues caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I'm sure all aspiring British coaches with a youth development pedigree are, in some way no matter who you support, supporting Liam.

"It is really inspirational to up-and-coming British coaches in the system to witness someone get such a role with his background and everyone hopes he does really well."

'Let's not forget – his appointment is based on talent'

Leroy Rosenior, Liam's father, played for clubs such as Fulham, the Hammers as well as Queens Park Rangers, with his coaching stint peaked with a five-month stint at the third-tier club Brentford FC back in 2006.

Two years ago, he was awarded an MBE in the 2019 New Year Honours for services rendered in combating inequality within the sport and wider society.

When Rosenior Jr hung up his boots he pursued his father's footsteps. He began penning a column for a national newspaper, where in 2017 he addressed the lack of diversity among managers. He highlighted that race does not determine coaching skill and said opportunities must be awarded based on qualification.

He further expressed the view he would repeat: how significant lack of diversity results in a failure to understand regarding footballers with diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

During an interview with The Athletic FC, he explained how his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "difficult" or "emotional", but said he understood the Netherlands international with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to follow him with a move from France to Chelsea in July.

In subsequent newspaper articles, he also confessed he was "embarrassed" to hear an unnamed staff member utter a homophobic slur. He pledged support for the Rainbow Laces initiative and wrote a public message to Donald Trump during his first US presidency, accusing him of "overt" prejudice.

He has subsequently built his reputation as a manager – initially with Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week Rosenior was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" following their time together with Derby.

Rosenior said his farewells to his former club earlier this week prior to putting pen to paper on a long-term contract at Chelsea.

Chelsea had the top flight's pioneering black boss with Gullit and the first black captain in Paul Elliott.
