Just as bad weather hit the north-west the previous evening, City blew the visitors aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a statement 3-0 win for the City coach's side due to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that firmly established their leadership claims as they consolidated their position at the WSL pinnacle.

Consecutive Losses for United

This scoreline represented successive Women's Super League setbacks for the United manager's side for the initial occasion since last May, placing them seven points off the league leaders with their trophy ambitions severely dented.

The Red Devils' capacity to balance domestic and European soccer with a thin roster has been a hotly discussed subject since they secured entry to the Champions League. Reviewing the calendar, it always appeared this was the matchday that would fully examine this ability. Unfortunately for the visitors, they seemed fatigued throughout, the memorable win against PSG clearly having had an impact.

Team Changes

Marc Skinner had attempted to rotate the squad with a a few adjustments. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all provided energy, although the omission of the in-form Malard to the substitutes was questioned.

City, in contrast, have no such workload concerns. Andrée Jeglertz made one adjustment from the previous win over the Toffees with Hemp making her first start since recovering from injury.

Commanding Opening Period

The pressure started to gather for the United boss and his team from the kickoff. This was a demonstration of the power from City whose dynamic offense played with and pulled the visitors apart with a superb initial 45 minutes display that saw them score three goals in just over twenty minutes.

This left the home team firmly in control and saw the visitors struggling. Prior to this match, United had conceded just a handful in this domestic competition but they collapsed in the wake of City’s offensive ingenuity.

Early Chances

The warning signs came quickly when Miedema used her strength to bundle Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot off target. Hemp was at the core of everything early on, exploiting the room left by Jayde Riviere down the visitors' right flank. Her deliveries were creating danger and led to an attempt for Yui Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg kicked off the line.

The Red Devils had a number of attacks forwards, their straightforward approach giving them options in the wide areas but they could not test Ayaka Yamashita. City, in the meantime, dominated possession, taunting their rivals and trying to pull them out of their organization.

Scoring Spree

They made their pressure count with almost thirty minutes played when Fujino won the hosts a corner. A ball to the far post was directed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Knaak to score. It was City’s 7th goal from a cross of the season.

They increased their cushion with another pair of goals just before the break. When Rose was able to advance through the center from the back, the pitch became spacious for the hosts. The key Kerstin Casparij picked the ball up on the right before sending a precise driven ball for Bunny Shaw to force home. Shortly later, they had a third after a rapid change in the ball saw Hemp afforded the opportunity to fire a shot home from distance.

Second Half

The most obvious change came from the United manager at the interval as Melvine Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was too late to shift the momentum of the game. Ex- Manchester City player Park came closest, striking the upright, but the away team were offensively poor and failed to produce a single shot on target.

The hosts, in contrast, could have added to their cushion when a delightful Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it mattered little to the hosts. After failing to overcome any team who finished above them last season, the manager's side now have victories against Arsenal and Manchester United to position them in a strong standing after nine matches.
