The Former President's Progressive Warning Misses The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies pose an grave threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The true challenge confronting Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data paint a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Most analysts concede it is essentially a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a genuine unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, there are reasons for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains significant strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
